Train Waiting Ticket – In a major move to make train journeys more convenient and hassle-free, Indian Railways has decided to revamp its waiting ticket system. From now on, the number of waiting list tickets issued in any train will be limited to just 25% of its total seating capacity. Train Travel Just Got Smoother

If you’ve ever booked a train ticket in India, you know the anxiety that comes with being on the waiting list. You keep checking your PNR status till the last minute, hoping it turns into a confirmed seat. But now, Indian Railways has brought in a rule that could ease this stress. As per a report by the Times of India, starting June 16, the Railways will issue waiting list tickets only up to 25% of the total available berths in all major classes – including AC First Class, AC Second, AC Third, Sleeper, and Chair Car.

This means if a train has 1,000 berths, the maximum number of waiting tickets issued will be just 250. Once this limit is hit, ticket bookings will close for that particular class. The move is being seen as a game-changer for frequent train travelers who are tired of last-minute cancellations or boarding without a seat.

The Reason Behind the Change

Indian Railways says that about 20% to 25% of waiting tickets usually get confirmed by the time the final reservation chart is prepared. So, limiting the waiting list to 25% aligns with this pattern. Earlier, there was no fixed percentage – for instance, up to 400 waiting tickets could be issued in Sleeper Class alone. This often resulted in chaos, with many passengers boarding the train without confirmed reservations, leading to overcrowding and discomfort for everyone.

The new policy ensures passengers don’t end up traveling without confirmed tickets or scrambling for space in already full coaches. This will not only make the journey more comfortable but also improve overall discipline and order within the trains.

Applies to All Major Trains

This new rule isn’t limited to just a few select trains. It will apply across all major categories including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Mail/Express, and Superfast trains. No matter which train you’re traveling in, the 25% waiting ticket rule will now be in place. Different zones of Indian Railways have already started implementing this change.

Moreover, the revised limits are being introduced keeping in mind various reserved quotas like those for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), senior citizens, and women. So, the balance between accessibility and crowd control is being well maintained.

Old Waiting List Limits Were Much Higher

If we look back, the earlier rules allowed for a much higher number of waiting tickets. As per a circular from January 2013, up to 30 waiting tickets could be issued in AC First Class, 100 in AC Second, 300 in AC Third, and a whopping 400 in Sleeper Class. That’s a lot of passengers traveling without guaranteed seats, which naturally led to overcrowded coaches and a lot of chaos.

A senior railway official pointed out that this chaos often came from people entering reserved coaches even without confirmed tickets, especially in Sleeper and 3AC classes. With this new system in place, the Railways hopes to make traveling more comfortable, manageable, and secure for everyone.

Clearer Ticket Status Means Better Planning

One of the biggest advantages of this rule is the clarity it offers passengers. If you’re trying to book a ticket and the waitlist is already at 250 in a 1,000-seat train, you’ll instantly know your chances of confirmation are low. This helps people plan their travel better. Instead of waiting endlessly and hoping for a miracle, travelers can explore other trains, routes, or even travel modes in time.
